Overview

The SpaceMedGuide ― A Space Planning Guide for Healthcare Facilities (Second Edition) presents guidelines that reflect the dynamic healthcare environment. First published in 1995 as ChiPlan, this standard reference book for the healthcare industry won an Outstanding Research Award from the American Institute of Architects. The SpaceMed guide is an update of this popular planning tool and provides state-of-the-art planning methodologies, industry benchmarks, and planning tips from decades of consulting to healthcare organizations throughout North America.

Workbook Narrative and TEMPLATES

SpaceMed's step-by-step space programming guide organizes clinical services and support functions to reflect new organization structures that are replacing the traditional "departments" of the past and promotes operational processes that are focused around the patient, exploit new technologies, and provide more efficient use of staff, equipment, and space.

Descriptive narrative in each of the sixteen workbook sections addresses the following topics after a general description of the specific facility component:

  • Current Trends

  • Key Planning Issues

  • Space Planning Approaches

  • Achieving Optimal Performance

  • Facility Layout Considerations

  • Potential Facility Planning Pitfalls

Detailed space planning templates are provided for use in developing room-by-room space programs for specific projects and an additional quick calculation of treatment spaces template is provided for selected diagnostic and treatment services.  All templates are included in an accompanying CD-ROM formatted in Microsoft® Excel. Most functional areas typically found in acute care hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, and specialized facilities are addressed in one of SpaceMed's sixteen sections.

The space planning templates can be used to develop a room-specific space program in net square feet with the spaces generally organized by functional category of space (e.g., patient intake area, procedure/patient care space, shared support space, and staff/administrative space).

Unique Space Programming Approach

Unique to SpaceMed's approach, specific rooms and areas within each category of space are identified as either:

  • Fixed spaces that generally do not vary in either number or size, regardless of the overall scope of activities of the department or functional component

  • Workload dependant spaces such as procedure rooms and patient care spaces that are typically dependent on the projected workload

  • Variable spaces that vary based on the total number of procedure/patient care spaces programmed

  • Optional spaces that depend on the scope of services, specific operational concepts, administrative policies, and desired level of amenities to be provided

Applicable For Many Types of Healthcare Facilities

A major medical center, providing a comprehensive array of services, may include all the components described in the SpaceMed guide. The space requirements for a freestanding ambulatory care center or specialized facility can be determined by assembling selected components from several different sections.

PROMOTES PRUDENT CAPITALINVESTMENT AND FUTURE FLEXIBILITY

The SpaceMed guide can help healthcare organizations improve their financial position through effective facility planning and capital investment. By understanding the trends affecting space allocation and configuration, deploying an integrated facility planning process, and planning flexible facilities, healthcare organizations can ensure that significant capital investments will reflect the needs of patients, caregivers, and payers well into the twenty-first century.
